The first book to explore the origins of the vampire slayer. Based on field and archival research in Bulgaria, and in part on my doctoral dissertation, "Sacrifice, Scapegoat, Vampire: The Social and Religious Origin of the Bulgarian Folkloric Vampire" (University of Virginia, 1999)
The first complete translation into English of this major twentieth century Russian poet was originally published in The Silver Age of Russian Culture (Ardis 1976), then as a bilingual facsimile edition by Station Hill Press (1987), and finally online by the Electronic Text Center, University of Virginia Library (1994)
My career has spanned several domains, but the main theme has been to apply my knowledge and skills in scholarly areas (linguistics and languages, creative writing) to technological problems in industry.
I hold a Ph.D. in Slavic Studies and Linguistics from University of Virginia. At the Master's level, I have an M.F.A. in Creative Writing from Bard College, and an M.A. in Russian Language and Literature from University at Albany. I have a B.A. in Russian Language and Literature from Bard College. I did graduate work in Linguistics at Cornell University, and passed the Masters Degree Field Exam in Linguistics at University of Pennsylvania. I have taught folklore at University of Virginia, and Creative Writing at Marist College.
I confess my skillset is not easily categorized. That is because I tend to adapt skills and knowledge I pick up here and there to the problem at hand, rather than acquiring skills for a certain job description or career trajectory. But generally speaking, I have competence in most types of writing and editing (especially in areas such as semantics, AI, and biomedicine & pharma), intelligence analysis, knowledge information and information retrieval, software development processes (Agile/scrum), photography, printing and design. I have up-to-date certificates in Business Analysis, E-Commerce and Digital Marketing, Marketing Data Analytics, UI/UX design.
Among my most innovative projects are an English phonology-based trademark searching system, one of the first online multi-lhypertextbooks in medicine, an XML document conversion process for a chemical and biological document base, a semantic ontology enabled graphical query interface, and Sematrix, an NLP-based multi-language cross-document knowledge extraction system to perform inferential and abductive reasoning.
